Sugar addiction is one of the most common themes I hear from clients coming to me for weight control. They intuitively know that they crave sugar but are still shocked when they learn the amounts of sugars they are consuming. Then, the second shock comes as I explain the harm that sugar is doing to their body, mind and spirit.

In my last post, I offered a quick calculation to help you better understand how many sugars (in all forms) you are consuming. By using the easy “carbs minus fiber divided by 5” calculation, you can instantly note the number of teaspoons of sugars you are about to consume per serving. Remember that these are ALL of the ingredients combined in that product that react within your body as a carbohydrate. Just looking at the number of sugars in the product doesn’t tell the entire story.

Why is sugar so bad, when it tastes so good? Over the next 10 days, I’m going to share with you the Top 10 reasons sugar is suicide on a spoon.

Reason #1…Your Weight

If you are addicted to sugar, you are not alone. In the past 20 years, sugar consumption per person has increased from 26 pounds to 135 pounds…per person! That is nearly 42 teaspoons, a little over 1/3 pound of sugar the average American eats each and every day.

From a calorie perspective, those 42 teaspoons at 16 calories per level teaspoon adds 672 calories to your daily caloric intake. That’s 4704 calories per week and 245,280 calories per year. Considering that a pound of fat contains 3,500 calories, eating the American average adds an extra pound of fat to your body (unless you burn it off thru exercise) each and every week. Are you seeing how easy it is to gain 50 pounds in a year?

From a “I like what I see in the mirror” perspective, sugar sabotages your scale and your skinny jeans.

Over the next several posts, you’ll learn why Dr. Bill Misner says “The health dangers ingested sugar creates when habitually imposed upon human physiology are certain. Simple sugars have been observed to aggravate asthma, muster mental illness, move mood swings, provoke personality changes, nourish nervous disorders, hurry heart disease, deliver diabetes, grow gallstones, hasten hypertension, add arthritis, and on top of all of that…It will kill you!”

Stay tuned to be inspired to kick your sugar addiction!

“Non-sick” represents the vast health field between medically sick and optimal health. When you are non-sick, your energy level is low, your focus isn’t clear and you rely on caffeine or other stimulants to keep you awake and going. Typical indicators of being in a non-sick state also include:

• Being overweight

• Not sleeping well

• Fatigued

• Weak or flabby

• Stressed out

• Taking a lot of over-the-counter medications

• Not as interested in sex or having a lowered libido

Non-sickness is caused by eating excessive amounts of nutritionally barren foods which overwork your organs and facilitate fat being stored in your body. This ongoing habit of poor nutrition can ultimately lead to life-threatening illness over time, such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancer and other diseases. Non-sickness is also caused by irregular sleep patterns that don’t allow your body adequate rest and by living in a constant state of stress.

In this non-sick state, time is against you. You become sedated and resigned to the conclusion that how you feel is normal, until, eventually, you have a heart attack or learn that you’ve developed diabetes. Our bodies were biologically designed to eat small, frequent meals, store calories and fat, move and be active, sleep with the cycles of the day and have short, infrequent bursts of stress. Yet, with the “advances” of living in the 21st century, nutritionally barren, calorie laden food is abundant and is as close as opening a refrigerator or sticking a hand out a car window. We have little need to be active as energy saving devices, such as cars and washing machines, are plentiful.

We get very little sleep and are stressed out all of the time. Add to the mix a food industry whose job is to make money and a pharmaceutical industry whose sole purpose is to treat sickness, and we begin to see a clearer picture of why optimal health can be difficult to achieve. In truth, the odds are actually stacked against you and your health with “non-sick” as the eventual winner. These industries do NOT have your best health interests at heart. All the while marketing agencies are getting rich promoting the latest, greatest magic pill and food science is getting better at knowing how to trick the human brain into wanting more and feeling less satisfied. Face it…thin and healthy just isn’t profitable… sickness is…and at YOUR expense!

The good news is that moving from being non-sick to optimal health is a relative short journey.

Taking the RIGHT steps each day will improve your health and give your body the space it needs to repair itself, and being at your ideal weight is a vital part of your journey.

Achieving and maintaining your ideal or optimal weight is essential to walking in the optimal health you were created to enjoy.

Get and give the gift of health this season...a present that won't go in the back of the closet or be re-gifted this year.

Yesterday was a blessing for me. Not only was I able to honor my daughter on her Angel Day, through her, I inspired a number of people to begin their journey to outrageous health. The holiday special I offered was very well received and my heart is always warmed when someone decides to care for themselves and their health.

Then…on top of all that, I receive a beautiful testimonial letter from a client of mine in New York who has had phenomenal results on the meal replacement plan I recommend to some of my clients. Although is he still on his health journey…he is well down that path.

To further inspire YOU to good health, I want to share his letter with you. Whether you have a little or a lot of weight to lose, you…can…do…it!

Meet Tim Kozak!

December 1, 2009

To whom it May concern,

I am a typical 59 year old male. I had returned to the NY area from the Northwest to assist my aging parents and open a small business. Changes in my life style, increased sedentary time and stress as well as a change in eating habits were all taking a toll. I was gaining weight by the day. It seemed like all I had to do was look at food and I would gain weight. As the weight increased so did my immobility and pain. I was starting to have Back and Knee problems, Physical activity was becoming a chore, and I was no longer able to do much of what I enjoyed just 5 years previously.
At a seminar on another matter, the speaker mentioned that he had lost around 40 lbs on a diet program in a relatively short time. As, Lynette Patterson, his personal diet program representative, was also attending the seminar I decided to find out more.
I approached Lynette and asked for some information on the program the speaker was involved in. Lynette was positive and assuring and said she would contact me after the seminar. When she contacted me, Lynette explained her services and the Medifast Slim for Life Plan. As I was now over 400 pounds and rising I decided to try it and enrolled in the program. I had hopes of equaling the speakers results and losing around 10 pounds per month. I hoped I could drop 90 to 100 pounds in a year. Boy was I in for a surprise.
I started the Medifast program just over three short months ago. My expectations of losing 10 pounds per month have been far exceeded. As of the writing of this letter I have lost 122 lbs.
Previously I wore tight 58 waist pants and I was gaining. None of my clothes fit me for any length of time. I was in constant discomfort as I tipped the scale at over 400. Today I weigh 278 and currently wear lose 48 waist pants. I am wearing much of my previous wardrobe. Including clothes that I haven’t been able to fit into for over three years.
The Program was easy, the food tasted good, and the cost was reasonable. I have gone off the plan on Thanksgiving and during a two week trip to China. I am still losing and my goal is to reach 200 pounds.
My family and friends are astounded. My girlfriend (who also went on the plan and has lost over thirty pounds) is delighted. I am more active and the pain from the excessive weight in my knees and back are gone.
I did not exercise or starve. I even cheated on several occasions. I didn’t eat the bag of chips or the large chocolate Sunday, but I did stray and had the occasional extra. Who knew Jello and carrots could taste so good.
All I can say to those who are undecided is try it. I am living proof that it works.
Lynette “Thank You”.

Sincerely,
Timothy Kozak

I don’t know about you, but I find his letter so inspiring. A beautiful, wonderful, amazing human being getting healthy!

Now…how about you?

You don’t have to go on meal replacements as Tim did, although they will jump start your weight loss in a powerful way. There are many ways in which to lose weight, ways that fit YOUR lifestyle and goals. Ways that are personal, just for you.

The very best way to know which plan is for you is to first know what it is your particular body needs. And, I haven’t found a better way to assess that than with my “What’s Going On” assessment. I’m extending my special holiday offer of just $47 for the 14-part assessment, a 30 minute strategy sessions with written results and recommendation plus12 weeks of coaching. You can learn more about the assessment and sign up for your very own by going here: http://mystrategiclifeplan.com/holiday

Want to present a loving, thoughtful gift to someone you care about? Although you can’t wrap “health” up with a bow, I will provide you with a charming gift certificate that you can place under the tree. Imagine the gift of a health coach, an accountability partner, an associate of support and encouragement….that is the gift you will provide someone if you choose to purchase this unique present. That won’t get stuffed in to the back of the closet or re-gifted next year!!

Why weight?

Healthy holidays,
Lynette

Note: Tim’s results are not only “not typical”, they are phenomenal! Most people do not lose weight at this rate. Everyone is different. Your metabolism, your willpower, your hormones all play a role in the rate in which you will lose weight. We won’t know how much or how quickly you will lose weight until you begin…and end…the process.

December 1st is the day my precious daughter Brennan became an angel. Prior to her death, being thin was easy.
Afterwards, eating became a source of comfort and the yo-yo began….until she ALSO became my inspiration for being fit and healthy.

I find it inspired timing that today, on her Angel Day, I offer a very special gift, a gift I hope will inspire you
(or someone you care for) to be fit and healthy too.

A gift of health during this season of giving.

http://mystrategiclifeplan.com/holiday

As part of this gift, I’m offering my complete 14 part “What’s Going On” health assessment so steeply discounted that any excuse of not taking care of yourself is gone.
In this assessment, we will look at:

What unwelcome guests are growing inside of you (eek!)

How well your liver is (or is not) detoxifying your body

How physical and mental stress is affecting your health

How much you are rusting on the inside (yes, rusting!)

How your thyroid is functioning

How well your gut is communicating with your brain

How well your digestive system is processing your food

The things that are draining your energy

Your level of “dangerous Inflammation”

How your Metabolism is functioning

Your level of Metabolic Syndrome

Your Insulin levels

(no needles required….whew!)

In addition, we will take a look at your Zinc, Vitamin D and Magnesium levels.

Finally, we will take a peak at your personality and see how your natural tendencies may be sabotaging your health.

Then… you’ll not only receive your results,
but I will personally explain them to you in a one-on-one strategy call.
AND… I’m gifting you 12 weeks of coaching (six group sessions) to make sure you stay on track and reach your goals.

The really cool thing is that so many health related issues are easy to fix!
Some minor adjustments to the foods you are eating or the supplements you are taking can make a tremendous difference in how well your metabolism functions, how easy it is to lose weight, and how much energy and focus you have.

Why weight?

http://mystrategiclifeplan.com/holiday

Want to GIVE the gift of health?
This package would make a wonderful present for someone you care about. Not sure how to tactfully suggest someone lose weight? Here’s my suggestion, just say:

“You are amazing, beautiful and wonderful and I’m concerned about your health. Because I care for you so much, I am gifting you a special present, a health coach of your very own. All you need to do to get started with Lynette is complete this health assessment and then schedule a time with Lynette to create your health plan.”

Then let it go. I’ll take good care of them, I promise!

http://mystrategiclifeplan.com/holiday

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at lynette[at]mystrategiclifeplan.com. I look very forward to hearing from you soon.

Healthy holidays,

Lynette

Yesterday I was whining on a call with my business coach about not wanting to do a task that I needed to do. I spoke of how I continue to procrastinate because I (stamping foot) simply didn’t want to do it. Even though it is an important task to move my business forward, I (whiiiine) didn’t want to build it into my daily “to do” list. Yes, I converted into my inner 4year old with arms crossed and lower lip stuck out (pout!).

Have you ever felt that way?

My coach didn’t hesitate and simply said….”you are reluctant to do this simply because the pain isn’t great enough.” He then asked “if your boys were kidnapped and held for ransom and the conditions of the ransom where that you do that task for an hour each day for a month, would you do it?”

You bet I would! For two hours, three hours, twenty-four hours if necessary. I would do it standing on my head with both hands tied behind my back, in my underwear on top of the Sears Tower singing Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Yet…as important as the task is, without those conditions of ransom, without the pain necessary to move me forward, it seemed difficult to drudge up the energy to do what needs to be done.

And I was able to see how that same principle applies to people who are sitting on the thumb tack of ill health.

Is that you?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again….everyone knows exactly HOW to lose weight and gain health. Everyone got the memo that being overweight is deadly, that eating junk food is a causing harm, that exercising is good for the body and brain. Yet, so many things get in the way of making daily choices that invite health.

What excuses are getting in your way? Is the pain of disease and death not enough?

If your children were kidnapped and held for ransom and the condition of release is that you choose the habits of health, would you do it? What changes would you make? Could you find 30 minutes a day to exercise? Another 30 minutes to pre-plan your menu and shop for fruits and vegetables?

What if I said that your current habits of disease were literally creating a hostage situation for your children. Would you believe me? Or, turn your head and pretend all is well? Would you argue that your bad habits of eating fast and processed food, of sitting on the couch, and drinking sugary drinks were not placing your children in a place of harm.

Children today are predicted to be the first in American history to not outlive their parents. Your habits are becoming their habits. But because their bad habits are beginning so young, their chances of dying early are greater.

Will you set them free? Set yourself free?

I don’t believe for a moment that 68% of Americans are on purpose choosing death. Just like the 4 year old that was whining inside of me yesterday, their inner 4 year old is saying “I’ll live forever”, “tomorrow I’ll follow the rules”, “eating this today won’t hurt me….or them.”

But it is.

I won’t apologize for being brutal and frank right now. I won’t apologize that I may be creating pain for you by writing these words. I only hope that the pain of reading this message is enough to create the shift that creates a different choice in your life.

When stress becomes long term and chronic, the net result is a metabolism-depressing and vitality-sappy disaster. Do you have a plan to manage stress?

Creating a Strategic Plan for your Life requires a look into all the area that affects your health. Study after study proves that stress makes you vulnerable to a host of physical and mental illness and generally has a negative impact on just about every part of your body. Stress:
• Suppresses your immune system
• Can cause a heart attack or stroke
• Increases your risk of many types of cancers
• Causes delays in wound healing
• Promotes inflammation
• Cause you to gain weight
• Impairs your memory
• Causes depression
• Increases risk of diabetes
• Deteriorates sexual function
• Ages you on the inside and outside

The Good News?

Managing health deteriorating stress is easy. By simply changing your eating patterns, adding some important nutrients and minerals to your diet and practicing stress management techniques, you can minimize the damage that stress creates. Losing weight can also reduce your stress, as being obese is a physical stressor too.

When I heard those words, I couldn’t help but laugh. Coming from an intelligent male with many years of education under his belt, the earnestness of that comment was truly astounding. And, it got me to thinking….we do live in a world where eating a salad once a week is considered a very big deal.

On a daily basis, I have conversations with people who swear to me that they eat really well, make good food choices and simply don’t understand how the weight continues to creep on or refuses to creep off. Inevitably, “eat really well” involves processed food they believed to be healthy or simply hadn’t factored in their calorie laden beverages (that’s not food, right?)

Studies show that Americans simply eat vegetables on a daily basis, with one exception – the potato, which is often fried or smothered in fat. Even lovely green vegetables are showing up battered on many a plate. Can’t count those either!

It’s not hard to get your veggies in for the day. For breakfast, sauté veggies with your omelet and snack of veggie strips throughout the day. Bring at least 3 cups of chopped vegetables in a baggie and make sure you eat them before the day is gone. Order a salad for lunch with low carb dressing. The salad acts as a fiber shoot and helps push the other food you eat out of your body sooner. Add spinach instead of iceburg lettuce to your sandwich.

See how easy it is to get in your servings?

And be sure to let me know how much better your feel, and look, once you begin adding veggies to your life. After all, that is the reason they were put on this earth, to give your body the nutrients it needs to be health!
